Uspávanka

Nový nápev na prostonárodné slová

Spi, duša, spi, zavri, očičky,
anjel môj krásny spi, sladko spi.
Spi, duša, spi, zavri očičky,
ô, kvet môjho žitia spi, sladko spi.

Nech sa ti sníva o lúke zelenej,
o bielom holúbku, o ruži, červenej,
Spi, duša, spi, zavri očičky,
anjel môj krásny spi, sladko spi,
holúbok môj krásny spi, sladko spi,
spi, sladko spi, spi, sladko spi.

=====

Lullaby

A New Tune to Traditional Words

Sleep, darling, close your eyes and slumber deep,
my lovely angel sleep, oh sweetly sleep.
Sleep, darling, close your eyes and slumber deep,
my beautiful white dove, sleep, sweetly sleep.

And may you dream about the meadows green,
of white doves and red roses may you dream.
Sleep, darling, close your eyes and slumber deep,
my lovely angel sleep, oh sweetly sleep,
my beautiful white dove, sleep, sweetly sleep,
sleep, sweetly sleep, sleep, sweetly sleep.

====

Keď na deň zvoniť mali

Slová: Ivan Krasko

Keď na deň zvoniť mali, vyšli sme.
Vyšli sme za prítmia, tak za šera
čakali, že snáď na úsvite
stratí sa nedôvera
a celý deň sme sami šli
v dôvere, bez oddychu,
dúfali, že snáď unavení
skrotíme krutú pýchu...
A večerom dva spolu došli sme,
bez pýchy tak nesvojskí!
A jedno srdce skučalo, och!
Tak biedne psovsky, tak biedne psovsky.

====

Before They Rang in the New Day

Words: Ivan krasko

Before they rang in the new day, we departed.
We departed in dusk, so in the half-light we expected
that perhaps at dawn
mistrust world be dispelled
and all day we ourselves
went in trust, without respite,
hoping, perhaps, though weary,
we would humble cruel pride.
At evening we two came together,
without pride, so alien!
And one heart howled, och!
Dog-miserable then, dog-miserable then.

(8/25) Fiddler / Guslar

8. Fiddler / Guslar

Mikuláš Schneider-Trnavský: Songs (2014)
Pavol Breslik: Tenor
Róbert Pechanec: Piano

Guslar

Slová: Svetozár Hurban Vajanský

Hercegovinou guslar blúdi,
spieva u prahov dobrých ľudí;
guslar je slepý, malý syn
vždy pri ňom, jako jeho stín.

Z úskalia Turek povyskočí,
nad hlavou ťažký handžár točí:
valí sa synka mladá krev,
lež neuhasí Turka hnev.

„Sem gusle! Gusle o skalinu
udre a hodí rozsadlinu.
Zajačali bôľne - desný spev,
lež nezhasí Turka ľúty hnev:

„Sem novce!“ Novce Turek v ruku,
k tomu ječermu, pojas, stuku
a z hlavy chomáč šediny,
tak zmizol v temné skaliny.

A čo mu nechal?
V starej hrudi pieseň.
Ach, tá sa búrno vzprúdi,
pomstou zapáli celý kraj;
Bože, tú pieseň požehnaj.

=====

Fiddler

Words: Svetozár Hurban Vajanský

The Hercegovina fiddler romas,
he sings in decent people's homes;
the fiddler's blind, his young son there
is with him always, everywhere.

A Turk leaps from the rocks nearby,
waving his scimitar on high;
the young son's blood streams forth in spate,
but the mad Turk's rage dose not abate.

"The fiddle!" Smashing it in spite,
he flings it down the rocks with might.
It moans a frightful song of pain,
but that crazed Turk demands again:

"Your money!" Grabbing his small purse
and all the fiddler had of worth
and fistfuls of his old grey locks,
the Turk went off among the rocks.

What did he leave with him?
A song in his old breast.
Oh, soon like fire it will erupt,
the land will burn to avenge its wrong;
Bless, O Lord, this song.

7. Keď Na Deň Zvoniť Mali ("When in the morning rings the bell") Ivan Krasko
8. Magdaléna - Vladimír Roy

=====

Magdaléna

Slová: Vladimír Roy

Vídaval som ju v prepych, jase,
zrak jej plál ohňom dráždených túh.
Peľ ruže v lícach, bujarosť v hlase,
v salône vonnom milencov ruch.

Teraz šat čierny, kto zná, čo smúti?
V hlbokim oku - lomený lúč,
pobledlá prelesť k sústrasti núti...
„pomiluj, Pane, odpúšťať uč!“

Pokľakla, na rtoch kajúcnosť nemá,
po líci bielom sĺz kanie prúd...

To pre náš klub je výborná téma!
Za chrbtom znie mi milenca súd.
To pre náš klub je výborná téma!
Za chrbtom znie milenca súd.

=====

Magdalen

Words: Vladimír Roy

I used to see her in proud abandon,
her bright eyes burning with lusts and longings,
rouge on her cheeks, and voice son wanton,
in the scented salon her lovers thronging.

Now dressed in black, for who knows what grieving?
The light is duller in her deep eye...
"O lord, have mercy, and teach forgiving!"
Her pale charm forces our sympathy.

She knelt, but her lips have no contrition,
down her white cheek falls a flood of tears...

A splendid theme for our club discussion!
her lover declares behind me here.
A splendid theme for our club discussion!
her lover declares behind me here.

(10/25) Chrysanthemums / Chryzantémy

10. Chrysanthemums / Chryzantémy

Mikuláš Schneider-Trnavský: Songs (2014)
Pavol Breslik: Tenor
Róbert Pechanec: Piano

Chryzantémy

Slová: Vladimír Roy

Tak bájny je kvet chryzantém
v tom mori suchých listov;
už všetko zvädlo, on sám len tu zostal,
tu zostal s nehou čistou.

On techou je mi jedinou,
to symbol mojej túžby,
nejedna pošla maninou,
zomrela spiatá húžvy...

Len jedna, jedna zostala...
či, vernou bude stále?
Už pŕchnu lístky chryzantém,
mne srdcom tiahnu žiale;
Už pŕchnu lístky chryzantém,
mne srdcom tiahnu žiale.

===

Chrysanthemums

Words: Vladimír Roy

Chrysanthemum, flower of fable,
in the dead leaves' dried-up sea!
All's faded, but it remains here,
remains in its purity.

The symbol of my yearnings,
my refuge at the last;
all the rest were dead-end turnings,
and shriveling the passed.

One, only one's unchanged...
oh, will it always remain?
The chrysanthemum's leaves are falling,
they pierce my heart with pain;
the chrysanthemum's leaves are falling,
they pierce my heart with pain.

(11/25) Do Not Look Round / Neobzeraj sa

11. Do Not Look Round / Neobzeraj sa

Mikuláš Schneider-Trnavský: Songs (2014)
Pavol Breslik: Tenor
Róbert Pechanec: Piano

Neobzeraj sa

Slová: Andrej Žarnov

Minúty v reťaz kujú ohnivá, ohnivá,
blen i sladkosť rovnakú má cenu.
kto ide, hroby zabúda, zabúda,
neobzeraj sa, neobzeraj.

Tvár je slnce padlé do cesty, padlé do cesty,
boje boli, boje budú.
S ťarchou len ísť a ísť, s ťarchou len ísť a ísť.
Neobzeraj sa, neobzeraj.

Paria sa štice, nebo pod klobúkom,
slovo je slamou suchou, suchou na vartu,
válka hrá divne, vlož i srdce.
Neobzeraj sa, neobzeraj.

Na ťažkých zvonoch rany zrejú,
zobákom slnce kľuje noc;
neobzeraj sa neobzeraj,
nik nepríde na pomoc.

=====

Do Not Look Round

Words: Andrej Žarnov

The minutes in their chain forge links, forge links,
the bile and sweetness are of equal value.
And the that moves forgets the graves, forgets,
do not look round, do not look round.

The face is a sun fallen on the road, fallen on the road,
battles were, battles will be.
With your burden just go on, with your burden just go on.
Do not look round, do not look round.

Matted hair is steaming, the sky's beneath your hat,
the word is dry straw, straw that's bonfire-dry;
war can play strange tricks, so pack your heart away.
Do not look round, do not look round.

Wounds are maturing in the heavy bells,
the sun's beak pecks the night;
do not look round, do not look round,
no one will be coming to your aid.

(12/25) We´re Sitting Here In Sadness / Sedíme tu smutní

12. We´re Sitting Here In Sadness / Sedíme tu smutní

Mikuláš Schneider-Trnavský: Songs (2014)
Pavol Breslik: Tenor

A muzika hučí, počúvame sólo,
a muzika hučí, počúvame sólo,
Keby toho, čo nás delí, len sto vŕškov bolo!

===

Little Flowers (Selection)

We're Sitting Here In Sadness

Words: Janko Jesenský

We're sitting here in sadness, impossible to hide,
from that one little valley, from that one little valley,
a hundred peaks divide us, a hundred peaks divide.

The music's playing loudly, we hear the violin speak,
the music's playing loudly, we hear the violin speak.
If only what divides us were just a hundred peaks!

13. I Found Out in the Fields / Našiel som si v šírom poli

Mikuláš Schneider-Trnavský: Songs (2014)
Pavol Breslik: Tenor
Róbert Pechanec: Piano

Našiel som si v šírom poli

Slová: Milan Rastislav Štefánik

Našiel som si v šírom poli,
Našiel som si v šírom poli
fialôčku k mojej vôli,
fialôčku, frajerôčku k mojej vôli.
Frajerôčka moja milá
rada by sa vydávala, rada by sa vydávala.

Nevydávaj sa ty, milá,
buď len rok, dva trpezlivá,
však ti líčko neodkvetá
a ja musím, a ja musím, preč do sveta.
====

I Found Out in the Fields

Words: Milan Rastislav Štefánik

I found out in the fields,
I found out in the fields,
a violet that would yield,
a violet, a sweetheart that would yield.
My sweetheart bright and merry
wished to marry, wished to marry.

Do not marry, no, my dear,
just be patient one, two years.
for your cheek won't lose its glow
and away to the world I have to go.

(14/25) Hey, I´ve Drunk All That I Had! / Hej, už som všetko prepil!

14. Hey, I´ve Drunk All That I Had! / Hej, už som všetko prepil!

Mikuláš Schneider-Trnavský: Songs (2014)
Pavol Breslik: Tenor

„Hej! Bodaj som ťa bola nikdy nepoznala,
nikdy nepoznala!

Bodaj som ťa bola nikdy nepoznala,
Bodaj som ťa bola nikdy nepoznala,
keď som ťa šuhajko darmo milovala!“

=====

Hey, I've Drunk All That I Had!

New Tune to Old Words

Hey, I've drunk all that I had, woe is me!
Even the shirt you see, that I've got on me,
that I've got on me.

See my little shirt, 'twas sewn by my sweetheart,
of silken thread she wove there in the green grove,
of silken thread she wove there in the green grove.

She stitched and stitched again, her tears fell like the rain:
"Oh, I wish I never knew you,
never knew you!

I wish I never knew you,
I wish I never knew you,
when I loved you, fine young fellow, all in vain!"

ZO SRDCA, OP. 35 (Výber)
Slová: Ferko Urbánek

Povedz mi dievčatko

Povedz mi, dievčatko, kohože máš rado?
Tie moje ovečky, snehobiele stádo;
tie moje ovečky, snehobiele stádo.

Tie moje ovečky, Poľanou sa pasú,
ľúbim si otca, mať i slovenskú chasu,

Who do you love, maiden, may I know?

my father, my mother, and the Slovak boys,

16. If I Were A Little Bird / Keby som bol vtáčkom

Mikuláš Schneider-Trnavský: Songs (2014)
Pavol Breslik: Tenor
Róbert Pechanec: Piano

======

======

If I Were A Little Bird

If I were a little bird, I'd fly beyond the wood,
to see what she's doing now, to see what she's doing now,
my mama who's so good,
to see what she's doing now, to see what she's doing now,
my mama who's so good.

She's sewing me a shirt, and thinking all the time.
Send me back, Lord, send me, send me, Lord, oh send
me back this son of mine,
send me back, Lord, send me, send me, Lord oh send
me back this son of mine.

17. Jánošík´s Harvest / Jánošíkova žatva

Mikuláš Schneider-Trnavský: Songs (2014)
Pavol Breslik: Tenor
Róbert Pechanec: Piano

Jánošíkova žatva

Žali ženci, žali rež
a Jánošík s nimi tiež,
ženci žali viazali,
Jánoškovi znášali.

Ženci brali po snope
a Jánošík po kope.
Ženci dali pri zlobe,
Jánošík dal chudobe.

Hej! Ženci brali po snope,
hej, a Jánošík po kope.
Hej! Ženci dali pri zlobe,
hej, Jánošík dal chudobe.

=====

Jánošík's Harvest

The mowers mowed the field right through,
and Jánošík was with them too;
the mowers mowed, they bound and heaped,
and Jánošík got what they repeated.

The mowers brought it sheaf by sheaf
and Jánošík had all complete.
The mowers gave with face dour,
and Jánošík gave to the poor.

Hey, the mowers sheaf by sheaf,
Jánošík, hey, all complete.
hey, the mowers, faces dour,
Jánošík, hey, to the poor.

18. The Cuckoo Sits... / Sedí kukuk...

Mikuláš Schneider-Trnavský: Songs (2014)
Pavol Breslik: Tenor
Róbert Pechanec: Piano

Sedí kukuk...

Sedí kukuk na javore, kuku,
díva sa, jak šuhaj orie, kuku.
Orie, orie, obzerá sa,
kde je milá, jeho krása,
čo kde robí, kým on plúžý,
či naň myslí, za ním túži,
kuku, kuku, kuku.

Sedí kukuk na jalšine, kuku,
prihovára sa dievčine, kuku.
Hotuj, dievča, partu, veniec,
švárny čaká ťa mládenec,
orie roľu blízo hory,
za tebou mu srdce horí,
kuku, kuku, kuku.

Sadol kukuk na vrch lipy, kuku,
radosťou mu srdce kypí, kuku.
Roľu starý dooráva,
šuhaj dievčá nahovára.
Prisahá sa, že ju ľúbi,
bozkom zláti lásky sľuby,
kuku, kuku, kuku.
=================

The Cuckoo Sits...

The cuckoo sits on the maple, cuckoo,
the young man ploughs the acre, cuckoo.
He ploughs and ploughs and turns to see
where can his lovely sweetheart be,
what is she doing while he ploughs
and is she longing for him now,
cuckoo, cuckoo, cuckoo.

The cuckoo sits on the alder, cuckoo,
talks to the girl as her elder, cuckoo.
Girl, prepare your bouquet, do,
for a dashing young man waits for you,
he's ploughing the field right by the hill,
but his heart is burning for you still,
cuckoo, cuckoo, cuckoo.

The cuckoo sits on the lime tree, cuckoo,
his heart is light and sprightly, cuckoo.
The old man ploughs the headland now,
the young man makes his lover's vow.
He loves his lass, and this he swears,
and kisses seal what he declares,
cuckoo, cuckoo, cuckoo.

19. Little Bird in Winter / Vtáčik v zime

Mikuláš Schneider-Trnavský: Songs (2014)
Pavol Breslik: Tenor
Róbert Pechanec: Piano

Vtáčik v zime

Už je zima, už je mráz...
kam sa, vtáčik môj, schováš?
Schovám sa do kroviny,
to sú moje periny.

Už je zima, už je sňah,
kam sa schováš? To je strach!
Zaletím do stodoly,
tam ma zima nebolí.

Prejde zima, prejde mráz...
zaspievam si potom zas.
Budem spievať, spievať zvesela,
budem spievať, spievať zvesela,
že vlasť zaplesá, že vlasť zaplesá,
že vlasť zaplesá celá.

Little Bird in Winter

Now it's winter, frost is hard,
where'll you hide, my little bird?
"In a bush I'll hide away,
in my feathers, that's to say."

Now it's winter, here's the snow,
where'll you hide, oh where'll you go?
"In a haybarn I'll remain,
winter cannot cause me pain."

Winter and the frost will pass,
I'll sing again at last.
I'll sing, sing merrily,
I'll sing, sing merrily,
that the land's smiling, that the land's smiling,
that the land's smiling cheerily.

21. I Fell In Love With My Sweetheart / Takú som si frajerôčku zamiloval

Mikuláš Schneider-Trnavský: Songs (2014)
Pavol Breslik: Tenor
Róbert Pechanec: Piano

Takú som si frajerôčku zamiloval

Takú som si frajerôčku zamiloval,
ako by ju maliaričok vymaľoval,
ačká čierne, biele líčka,
z ruže púčok na ústočká,
ako by ju maľovala maliaročka.

Lenže už je, moja milá, všetko darmo,
keďže musím maširovať zajtra ráno,
veru áno: zajtra ráno,
pred svitanám skoro ráno,
skôr, než výnde jasné slnko nad Komárno.

=================

I Fell In Love With My Sweetheart

I fell in love with my sweetheart,
She's like a painter's work of art,
dark eyes, white cheeks, and lips
like petals of the rose,
as if a painter painted every part.

But now, my love, it's all in vain,
tomorrow I must march away.
Oh yes, before the dawn,
before the rising sun
above Komárno brings the break of day.

(22/25) What Everybody´s Saying / Všetci ľudia povedajú

22. What Everybody´s Saying / Všetci ľudia povedajú

Mikuláš Schneider-Trnavský: Songs (2014)
Pavol Breslik: Tenor
Róbert Pechanec: Piano

Všetci ľudia povedajú

Všetci ľudia povedajú, že ja ľúbim mlynárku,
všetci ľudia povedajú, že ja ľúbim mlynárku,
a ja ju neľúbim, ja ju len rád vidím, a prečo?
Pretože má pri úšku frndžalku-ku-ku-ku,
pretože má pri úšku frndžalku.

Všetci ľudia povedajú, že ja ľúbim vínečko;
to je moja medecína, uzdraví mi srdiečko;
už ma dávno bolí, nič ho nevyhojí, a prečo?
Pretože mlynárka s iným chodí-dí-dí-dí,
Pretože mlynárka s iným chodí.

Nalej, nalej, mlynáročka, vínka ešte naposled,
pôjdete mi, kamaráti; onedlho na pohreb;
Do hrobu ma dajte, a dobre sa majte, a prečo?
Pri vínečku na mňa pamätajte
a moju mlynarečku pekne pozdravujte.

What Everybody's saying

I love the miller maid, that's what everybody's saying,
I love the miller maid, that's what everybody's saying,
and I don't love her, I just like to see her, and why?
Because the pendant on her ear keeps swaying-ing-ing-ing,
Because the pendant on her ear keeps swaying.

And everybody's saying that I love my glass of wine,
it's just my medicine, it heals this heart of mine;
for ages now it's hurting, nothing can cure it, and why?
Because the miller maid with someone else is going-ing-ing-ing,
Because the miller maid with someone else is going.

Pour the wine then, miller maid, one last glass for me,
and gather round me, friends, soon my funeral will be,
lay me in the grave, and fare you well, and why?
Remember me with a glass of wine
and a greeting to that miller maid of mine.

(23/25) Drink the Wine, My Lads / Pime chlapci, pime víno

23. Drink the Wine, My Lads / Pime chlapci, pime víno

Mikuláš Schneider-Trnavský: Songs (2014)
Pavol Breslik: Tenor
Róbert Pechanec: Piano

Pime, chlapci, pime víno,

Pime, chlapci, pime víno,
však nám teče potok mimo,
Keď sa vínka napijeme,
vodičkou sa umyjeme.

Nech mi nehovorí žiaden,
abych išiel zo šenku ven,
potom pôjdem zo šenku ven,
keď zaplatím, čo som dlžen.

Krčmárovi za vínečko,
mojej milej za perečko,
potom pôjdem zo šenku ven,
keď zaplatím, čo som dlžen.

Drink the Wine, My Lads

Drink the wine, my lads, some more,
there's a stream outside the door.
When the wine is all drunk dry.
we'll have water to wash by.

Let nobody tell me, So,
you should leave the pub and go!
I will leave the pub and go
when I've paid all that I owe.

To the publican for sips,
to my sweetheart for her lips;
then I'll leave the pub and go
when I've paid all that I owe.

(24/25) The Barmaid Was Pouring / Šenkovala šenkárička

24. The Barmaid Was Pouring / Šenkovala šenkárička

Mikuláš Schneider-Trnavský: Songs (2014)
Pavol Breslik: Tenor
Róbert Pechanec: Piano

Šenkovala šenkárička

Šenkovala šenkárička nové víno,
prišel za ňú mysliveček: ulej mi ho.
Šenkárička nalieva, myslivec ju objíma,
a ten její najmilejší sa im dzíva.

Nech ja to viac, moja milá, neuvidzim,
že by si sa objímala s každým iným!
Myslivec sa rozhneval, vytáhel meč, do nej vťal,
ani jeden, ani druhý jej nedostal.

=====

The Barmaid Was Pouring

The barmaid was pouring the new wine, see;
a hunter came up to her; pour one for me.
The barmaid was pouring the hunter embraced her,
just when her dearest darling faced her.

No more, my love, let me never see
you embracing anyone else but me!
The hunter stabbed her with furious knife;
none of the tow had her to wife.

(25/25) When I Confessed Today / Keď som sa spovedal

25. When I Confessed Today / Keď som sa spovedal

Mikuláš Schneider-Trnavský: Songs (2014)
Pavol Breslik: Tenor
Róbert Pechanec: Piano

My favorite song in this album.

Keď som sa spovedal

(Ej, hory, hory, hory čierne)

Keď som sa spovedal, farár mi povedal,
ak frajerku nemám, aby som si hľadal..

Ej, hory, hory, hory čierne,
ej, neraz som ja prešiel cez ne,
ej, neraz, nie dva nevečeral,
ej, ani doma nenocoval!

Tak túžim za tebou, jak rybka za vodou,
a ja za tebou tak, ako za horou vták!

Ej, hory, hory, hory čierne,
ej, neraz som ja prešiel cez ne,
ej, neraz, nie dva nevečeral,
ej, ani doma nenocoval!

When I Confessed Today

(Hey, Hills, Hills, Hills So Black)

When I confessed today, the priest had this to say,
"If you don't have a sweetheart, find one right away!"

Hey, hills, hills, hills, so black,
hey, I've crossed them on my track,
hey, hungry while I roamed,
hey, and slept away from home!

Like a fish longs for water, I'm longing for you still,
I'm like a bird that's distant from his native hill.

Hey, hills, hills, hills, so black,
hey, I've crossed them on my track,
hey, hungry while I roamed,
hey, and slept away from home!
